    THE CONGOLESE ARMY HAS BEEN STRENGTHENED BY THE ADDITION OF THE FIRST WOMEN PARATROOPERS IN AFRICA. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THEY HELD THEIR FIRST PUBLIC JUMPING DISPLAY.

    THWENTY-THREE CONGOLESE WOMEN, AGED FROM 15 TO 25, TOOK PART IN THE DISPLAY. THIS FOLLOWED TWO WEEKS' TRAINING. ONE REASON FOR TRAINING THE WOMEN WAS TO PROVIDE THE CONGOLESE ARMY WITH A MOBILE CORPS OF TYPIST, NURSES, COOKS, AND OTHER FEMALE PERSONNEL. THE WOMEN ARE ENLISTED FOR A PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS AND UNDERGO DRILL AND FIREARMS TRAINING.

    SPECTATORS AT FRIDAY'S DISPLAY INCLUDED THE PRESIDENT OF THE CONGO (LEOPOLDVILLE), GENERAL JOSEPH MOBUTU, HIMSELF A TRAINED PARATROOPER, THE PRIME MINISTER, GENERAL LEONARD MULAMBA, AND THE CHIEF OF THE CONGOLESE ARMY, GENERAL BOBOSO.

    THE CONGOLESE ARMY HAS ONE BATTALION OF MEN PARATROOPERS AND ANOTHER BATTALION IN TRAINING.
