Background: In France, fishermen staged a strike and a demonstration on Monday (1 October) in protest against British fishing regulations and in particular, against the arrest of two Brittany fishing boats in September.
SYNOPSIS: In Paris, striking fishermen marched to the home of the French Prime Minister Raymond Barre. They called for compensation for the owners of the fishing boats arrested by British authorities. On the thirteenth of September a boat called the "Reverend Pere Lebruf" was detained in the English Channel and three days later the "Cap d'Erquy" was arrested near Milfordhaven in south-west Wales. The fishermen were fined and their fishing gear confiscated. The demonstrators demanded that the French government fight the British fishing regulations through the European Common Market Commission and compensate the penalised fishermen.
In the Brittany port of Loctudy, the docks were at a standstill. The dispute between the French fishermen and British authorities arose in July when Britain imposed restrictions on the fishing for shrimp and crayfish. The British announced on the first of July new minimum net sizes which other Common Market countries including France, wanted delayed until later in the year. Britain claims the new mesh sizes are needed to protest the fishing stock while French fishermen argue that existing restrictions are sufficient. A Common Market court is to rule on the dispute before the end of the year.
