  • Description

A flash of thigh, highlighted by slit skirts over abbreviated shorts, was one of designer Pierre Cardin's main themes at his Spring and Summer Fashion showing in Paris on Tuesday (January 26).

Cardin was revived a group a authentic mini-dresses for cocktail wear. But the collection's message is the slit skirt, handled in a multitude of ways. There are long Oriental cheongsam dresses over brief shorts made of matching flower fabrics. Daytime skirts are kept slit and slashed, constantly showing the legs encased in Cardin's opaque tights.

He even shows bloomer suits for cocktail wear, with puffy organdy bloomers worn under flower printed tabards that stop at mid-thigh.

But the mid-calf length is definitely axed as far as Cardin is concerned, except in few coast worn over dresses with just skim the knees. Variations on the slit skirt theme runs through the showing -- slit dresses and tunics over shorts; slit coats over dresses; panelled skirts cut like giant petals with rounded cutaway sides, often banded in contrasting colours.

With all emphasis on the leg and skirt, Cardin plays down the head which is encased in tight little jersey caps that fit as snugly as a bathing cap and hide very strand of hair. Some outfits, however, are emphasised with giant-brimmed hats in complete contrast to the bathing-cap look.

Colours, as everywhere in Paris this season, are getting brighter. Cardin favours strong shades of peach, flower pinks, persimon and orange, all the violets, and mint green.
