  • Description

THAT MOST GENTLE YET POWERFUL OF BEASTS, THE ELEPHANT, TOOK PRIDE OF PLACE IN A CARNIVAL HELD IN EAST THAILAND RECENTLY. MORE THAN 200 ANIMALS SHOWED THEIR STRENGTH AND INTELLIGENCE IN A SERIES OF EVENTS WHICH DELIGHTED THE LARGE CROWD OF ONLOOKERS.

SURIN IS THE HOME OF GREAT ELEPHANT HUNTERS AND TRAINERS, MEN REGARDED AS THE BEST IN THE WORLD. WATCHING OVER THE PROCEEDING WITH A SHARP YET BENIGN EYE WAS THE SENIOR TRAINED, COMFORTABLY SEATED ON A 80-YEAR-OLD ELEPHANT UNDER A SEVEN-TIER UMBRELLA.

HUNTING SKILLS OF TRAINERS WERE DEMONSTRATED. A LOOP WAS ATTACHED TO THE END OF A POLE AND THE HUNTSMEN MANAGED TO GET IT ROUND THE ANIMAL'S HOOF.

THE ELEPHANTS RACED OVER A 300 YARDS COURSE, KEEPING TO THEIR LANES LIKE TRAINED ATHLETES. THE CROWD GREW VERY EXCITED WHEN ANOTHER ELEPHANT IMPERTURBABLY TOOK PART IN THE TUG OF WAR AGAINST 60 HUSKY SOLDIERS OF THE THAI ARMY. THEIR COMBINED WEIGHT WAS ALMOST DOUBLE THAT OF THE ANIMAL: IT DRAGGED THEM ALONG QUITE NONCHALANTLY.

THE ELEPHANT IS A SYMBOL OF GOOD LUCK TO THE THAIS. IT APPEARS ON THEIR COINS, IN MANY OLD PAGODAS, AND WAS ORIGINALLY ON THE THAI NATIONAL FLAG.
