  • Description

The Wine war between Italy and France entered a new stage on tuesday (April 8) when France's Agriculture Minister, M. Christian Bonnet came under questioning in Brussels about the suspension of Italian wine exports by his country.

France, under considerable pressure from its winegrowers, announced the embargo late last month. Italy has indicated it will take the matter to the Common Market Court of Justice claiming the action is against the E.E.C.'s free trade rules.

Meantime, wine destined for France has been turned back. A tanker load returned to Genoa on Monday. The biggest problem facing the Italian producers is what to do with the wine. It has been a bumper year in both France and Italy and storage tanks are full.

Last weekend five wagon loads of Italian wine were emptied on a railway track near Bordeaux in protest. The shipment in Genoa is being unloaded and put in road and rail tankers until the situation is sorted out.
