  • Description

A PROJECT WHICH COULD GIVE AN IMPORTANT BOOST TO GHANA'S ECONOMY WAS SET IN OPERATION ON SATURDAY (DECEMBER 3) BY THE MEMBER OF THE GOVERNING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL RESPONSIBLE FOR LANDS, MINERALS AND INDUSTRIES, MR. B.A. YAKUBU. HE INAUGURATED AN OIL DRILLING PROJECT NEAR ATIAVI, IN THE VOLTA REGION.

THE PROJECT WAS STARTED IN 1961 AFTER GHANA SIGNED A TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT WITH RUMANIA.

MR. YAKUBU TOLD THOSE AT THE CEREMONY THAT RUMANIAN EXPERTS HAD PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE PROJECT, WHICH, HE SAID, TOPPED ALL EFFORTS MADE TO FIND OIL IN GHANA SINCE 1950.

HE SAID IF GHANA DID FIND COMMERCIAL QUANTITIES OF OIL, THE COUNTRY COULD CEASE TO DEPEND SOLELY ON COCOA AS AN EARNER OF FOREIGN CURRENCY. OIL ALSO WOULD SAVE GHANA MUCH IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE.

THE CEREMONY AT THE RIG SITE WAS ATTENDED BY THE RUMANIANS, MEMBERS OF THE VOLTA REGION ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE AND CHIEFS.
