  • Description

INTRODUCTION In the west African state of Ivory Coast heavy road traffic has increased considerably over the past 12 months.

SYNOPSIS: The main centre of activity is the capital city of Abidjan, the country's major port. There are numerous transport vehicles including five thousand lorries.

The information pointing out the increases came from the Ivory Coast's National Centre of Freight. During the first nine months of 1976, 151 million tons (153 million tonnes). The amount of freight has been increasing by a monthly average of between 15,000 and 17,000 tons (15,000 and 17,000 tonnes) over the last two years.

At the moment, there's seasonal decrease in tonnage shifted but this picks up again in April and May. June and July are quieter and the transporting of goods to neighbouring countries doesn't pick up again until August and September.

Mali and Niger are the countries that receive most of the goods transported from Abidjan. During 1976, transport of goods to Mali and Niger increased respectively by 75 percent as the Ivory Coast's best trading partner. It is expected that when the full figures for last year are received the freight increase will be shown to be even bigger.
