Two of the touring New Zealand All Blacks rugby players, Ian Kirkpatrick and Bryan Williams, were signing autographs in a shop when the violence broke out in central Cape Town on Thursday. They dashed for safety through clouds of tear gas. Kirkpatrick and New Zealand news photographer Ross Wiggans said they both vomited in the gas before they were picked up by a police car and driven back to their hotel.

Background: Police fired tear gas and staged a baton charge in Cape Town, South Africa on Thursday(2 September) to disperse 3,000 mainly coloured - mixed race - demonstrators in the city centre.

SYNOPSIS: There has been unrest throughout the week in coloured townships near Caps Town, but this is the first time the city centre has been affected. No reason was give for Thursday's demonstration, but South Africa's two-and-a-half million colours have lately become increasingly militant in protesting against the government apartheid racial policies.

As the gas grenades exploded in the streets, both demonstrators, police and citizens going about their day-to-day business were affected. Office workers overlooking the scene reported that during the police baton charge elderly women out shopping were knocked down and in its wake the pavements were strewn with shoes, scarves, and broken spectacles. Afterwards the crowd broke up into smaller groups.

Later on Thursday two men were reported killed and one wounded when police opened fire on rioting demonstrators in coloured townships on the outskirts of Cape Town.
