  • Description

SOME OF THE BIGGEST BATTLES IN SOUTH VIETNAM WITH THE VIET CONG DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN OVER CONTROL OF THE HIGHWAYS -- THE COUNTRY'S LIFELINES. RECENTLY, THE GOVERNMENT'S 22ND AND 23RD RANGER BATTALIONS WERE GIVEN THE TASK OF CLEARING HIGHWAY 7, SAIGON'S ONLY ROAD LINK WITH THE PLEIKU AND PHU BON PROVINCES.

KEEPING THE HIGHWAYS OPEN IS VITAL TO THE SURVIVAL OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT. BY CUTTING THE ROADS, THE VIET CONG CAN ISOLATE AND INFLUENCE THE LOCAL POPULATION AND CAUSE THE GOVERNMENT AND FRIENDLY FORCES TREMENDOUS PROBLEMS IN TRANSPORTING SUPPLIES AND TROOPS.

ONE SUCH HIGHWAY UNDER VIRTUAL VIET CONG CONTROL IS HIGHWAY 7, WHICH TURNS OFF HIGHWAY 14 IN PLEIKU PROVINCE ABOUT 20 MILES SOUTH OF PLEIKU CITY TO THE TOWN OF CHEO REO, CAPITAL OF PHU BON PROVINCE. THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT CONSIDERED THE HIGHWAY SAFE FOR FIVE YEARS, AND FEW PEOPLE BUT THE VIET CONG HAVE USED IT IN THE PAST TWO YEARS.

AS PART OF THEIR EFFORT TO REOPEN THE HIGHWAYS, THE GOVERNMENT RECENTLY SENT OUT THE 22ND AND 23RD RANGER BATTALIONS WITH UNITED STATES ADVISERS TO CLEAR HIGHWAY 7. ABOUT 50 OF THE 700 TROOPS IN THE FORCE ATTENDED A ROMAN CATHOLIC SERVICE BEFORE SETTING OUT FROM PLEIKU -- SINGING HYMNS, SAYING PRAYERS AND RECEIVING THE BLESSING OF THEIR PADRES.
