  • Description

General Felix Malloum, the Head of State of Chad, recently paid a forty-eight hour visit to the Eastern region of the country to win support for his administration.

During his visit the Chad leader stressed his policy of national reconciliation since the overthrow of former President Tombalbaye, killed in a coup last April.

In Eastern Chad General Malloum aimed his efforts at formerly rebellious groups and said that prominent opponents of the previous regime have rallied to his Government.

During his tour through the Eastern region General Malloum was accompanied by former rebel leader Hassan Ahmed Moussa who returned to Chad from exile in Libya in October. Several other rebel leaders who had previously been operating in the eastern region were also in the Head of State's Party.

Shortly after his return to the Chad capital, N'Djamena, on Monday (22 December) General Malloum met the French Supply Minister, Monsieur Robert Galley, in an effort to normalise relations between the two countries.

Although international interest is centred on the fate of French archaeologist Madame Francoise Claustre, who has been held captive by rebels in northern Chad for nearly 20 months, Monsieur Galley told newsmen that he regarded the affair as a purely internal matter for the Chad authorities to settle.
