Background: The first of some 900 dependents of US military and civilian personnel left the Panama Canal zone for the United States Tuesday (January 14).

Approximately 50 of those who expressed a desire to leave the zone boarded a military plane bound for Charleston, South Carolina. The plane also carried two coffins containing the bodies of two of the US soldiers who were killed in the violence five days earlier.

Most of the 50 who left the zone were women and many of them were pregnant. They arrived at Charleston Air Force Base and from there a number of them made private arrangements to return to their homes.
