  • Description

Strict precautions were in force in Famagusta on Wednesday (29 September) when the Turkish army continent was replaced as part of the Cyprus Independence Agreement. Photographers were denied access by United Nations troops as the new men arrived in a Turkish troopship, and the convoy of men to Nicosia was accompanied by United Nations scout cars and a helicopter.

Tension has been high on the island since the reported return early in September of General Grivas, the former Eoka leader. British newspapers have reported meetings between General Grivas and leaders of the banned National Front, the rightwing extremist group which supports union with Greece.
