  • Description

THE C-123 TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT HAS EMERGED AS A SUCCESSFUL 'WORKHORSE' FOR THE UNITED STATES IN THE FIGHTING AGAINST THE VIET CONG IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THIS IS DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE AIRCRAFT IS SLOW AND AWKWARD AND THE LAST ONE WAS BUILT MORE THAN TEN YEARS AGO.

THE C-123 IS A TWIN-ENGINE PROPELLOR-DRIVEN PLANE WITH A TOP SPEED OF ONLY 140 MILES AN HOUR (225 KM PH), SLOWER THAN SOME SPORTS CARS.

HOWEVER, IT HAS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES. IT IS POWERFUL, AND IT CAN OPERATE FROM ROUGHLY MADE AND SHORT RUNWAYS.

THE TASKS FOR WHICH THE C-123 IS USED ARE NUMEROUS. THEY ARE BEING EMPLOYED TO TRANSPORT LIVESTOCK TO ISOLATED RURAL VILLAGES; TO TRANSPORT MEN AND EQUIPMENT, AND TO AIRLIFT REFUGEES AND PRISONERS TO REPATRIATION CAMPS IN SOUTHERN AREAS OF SOUTH VIETNAM.

IT IS ALSO EASY TO FLY AND PILOTS CAN BE TRAINED IN A VERY SHORT TIME - ONE PILOT RECENTLY FLEW 60 MISSIONS IN A C-123 IN HIS FIRST WEEK OF BEING INTRODUCED TO THE PLANE.

WHEN THE AIRCRAFT IS LANDING OR FLYING LOW A MEMBER OF THE CREW MANS A MACHINE MOUNTED ABOVE THE COCKPIT AS A DEFENCE AGAINST SNIPING.
