  • Description

THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS AND ARMED MILITIAMEN CELEBRATED THE END OF A MUTINY AGAINST PRESIDENT FRANCOIS DUVALIER WITH A RALLY IN PORT AU PRINCE ON MONDAY (27 APRIL).

LARGE GROUPS OF CIVILIANS AND MILITIA UNITS WERE BROUGHT INTO THE CITY BY BUS AND TRUCK FROM NEARBY TOWNS TO TAKE PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION. SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED FOR THE DAY TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE. THE RALLY HAD A CARNIVAL SPIRIT AS THE CROWDS DANCED AND CHANTED TO THE SOUND OF BONGO DRUMS AND HORNS IN FRONT OF THE LEGISLATIVE PALACE.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS KEPT UNDER SURVEILLANCE BY HUNDREDS OF SECRET POLICE -- MEMBERS OF THE SO-CALLED "TON-TON MACOUTE" FORCE WHICH HELPED TO SUPPRESS THE MUTINY WITH THE AID OF MILITIA UNITS.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS FOLLOWED BY THE EXECUTION OF NINE MEN FOR ALLEGED COMPLICITY IN FRIDAY'S ATTEMPTED COUP -- DURING WHICH THE ISLAND'S ENTIRE COASTGUARD FLEET OF THREE VESSELS SHELLED PORT AU PRINCE, BUT FAILED TO HIT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE.

THE COASTGUARD CUTTERS HAVE BEEN REPORTED HEADING FOR THE UNITED STATES NAVAL BASE AT ROOSEVELT ROADS, PUERTO RICO. THE CREWS HAVE REQUESTED POLITICAL ASYLUM IN THE UNITED STATES.
