  • Description

Boxing, and Spanish heavyweight Alfredo Evangelista has easily retained his European title with a first round knock out over Belgian contender, Jean-Pierre Coopman. For Coopman, who once challenged Muhammad Ali for the world title, it could be the end of his professional career.

SYNOPSIS: Before a capacity crowd of 5000 in the Forest National Stadium in Brussels, the Spanish champion lost little time in establishing that the fight would be all his way. His opponent, Jean-Pierre Coopman of Belgium, once had held the European title but that is where the similarities between the two men ended.

Coopman in the early moments of Round One took the fight to Evangelist who revelled in the conditions, throwing lefts and rights almost at will.

Coopman soon went down under the barrage having no answer to the Spaniard's strength and a aggression.

At two minutes 41 seconds of Round One, it was all over. Italian referee, Mr Bellagamba, consulted Coopman's corner and then declared that the Belgian was unable to defend himself.

Although there was no comment from the Coopman camp, it is widely expected that the 31 year old Belgian will retire from the ring. However, for Evangelista and his supporters, the brilliance of the victory could be sign of more to come: perhaps even another crack at the world title.
