  • Description

Voting in Italy .... the administrative election began November 6. Though not a general election, the outcome affects the whole country and is concerned with national as well as local issues. About 33 million people were eligible to vote.

The governing Christian Democratic Party is hoping for an endorsement of the present Administration. A-left-of-Centre Prime Minister Fanjani leads a minority Christian Democrat Cabinet, with the Parliamentary support of the three smaller centre parties - the Social Democrats, Republicans and Liberals.

The political grouping was formed after the Christian Democratic Government supported only by neo-fascists ended in civil disorders in the summer.

Among the early voters were Palmiro Togliatti, leader of the Communists Party; and Giovanni Gronchi, President of Italy and a Christian Democrat. A total of nine parties are taking part in the present elections.
