  • Description

The Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) met in Ankara, Turkey on Tuesday (15 May) to define further the alliance's nuclear policy.

The two-day meeting, which was chaired by NATO Secretary General, Joseph Luns, was attended by eight NATO nations which mae up the NPG -- United States, West Germany, Britain, Italy, Norway, Canada, Holland and Turkey.

According to the Group's sources, the defence ministers of the eight nations worked on guidelines covering the follow-on use of nuclear weapons by NATO in the event of an attack by the forces of the Warsaw Pact countries.

The alliance has already drawn up guidelines covering an initial nuclear strike in the event of an invasion of its territory.

The two-day meeting comes at a time when NATO and Warsaw Pact representatives have been meeting since January 31st in Vienna, Austria, to draw up plans for mutual talks this autumn on balanced force reductions in Central Europe.
