  • Description

An Israeli mother won a gold medal on Sunday at the Asian Games in Bangkok. Mrs. Hana Shezfi won the women's 1500 metres with her nearest rival, Japan's Mikayo Inoue, 15 second behind.

Mrs. Shezfi, who recently made a comeback after giving birth to a baby, led most of the way and was never seriously troubled. Her time of 4 minutes 25.1 seconds was automatically a games record as it was the first time the event has been staged at the Asian Games. Four years ago she won a gold medal in the 800 metres. Lee Chow-Hsa of Taiwan came third.

In the swimming titles, Japan's supremacy continued unchecked. 26-year-old Kunihiro Iwasaki won the men's 200 metres freestyle gold medal for the second successive time.

Swimming in lane six, Iwasaki let fellow-countryman Waseda Noboru in lane five set the early pace. But in the sprint to the Minish Iwasaki pulled ahead to beat Noboru by four-tenths of a second. He broke his 1966 games record by two-tenths of a second with a time of 2 minutes 1.5 seconds. Jairulla Jaitulla of the Philippines took the bronze medal.
