  • Description

DR. RALPH BUNCHE, THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL CONGO EMISSARY, ARRIVED AT THE KATANGESE MINING CENTRE OF KIPUSHI, ON THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN BORDER NEAR ELISABETHVILLE, LAST MONDAY.

TRAVELLING BY ROAD FROM THE KATANGESE CAPITAL AFTER AN EARLIER VISIT TO JADOTVILLE, DR BUNCHE WAS ESCORTED INTO KIPUSHI BY ARMOURED CARS. KIPUSHI IS OCCUPIED BY UN TROOPS OF THE 38TH IRISH INFANTRY BATTALION, AND DR BUNCHE STARTED HIS VISIT BY INSPECTING AN IRISH GUARD OF HONOUR TO THE AIRS OF A KILTED IRISH PIPE BAND, THEN WENT ON TO VISIT OTHER UNITS IN THE AREA.

THE UN OFFICIAL TOLD AN IMPROMPTU PRESS CONFERENCE THE UNITED NATIONS WOULD "EXERCISE OUR FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT ANYWHERE WE CAN, AND EVERYWHERE IN THE CONGO." HE SAID: "WE HAVE A LIST OF PRIORITIES." BUT HE ADDED IT WOULD BE INDISCREET TO DISCLOSE THEM NOW. ASKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ADVANCE ON KOLWEZI, PRESIDENT TSHOMBE'S LAST STRONGHOLD IN KATANGA, HE SAID THE UN WOULD GO TO KOLWEZI WHEN IT WAS "OPPORTUNE."
(DR BUNCHE LASTER RETURNED TO ELISABETHVILLE AND LEFT BY AIR FOR LEOPOLDVILLE, SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE PRESIDENT TSHOMBE RETURNED TO THE KATANGESE CAPITAL AFTER TEN DAYS' ABSENCE.)
