  • Description

Barbara Smuts, the 24-year-old American girl released by "Simba" guerrillas with a list of demands for the freeing of three other people abducted with her from the world-famous Gombe research centre, appeared at a news conference on Monday (26 May) after the Tanzanian Government had rejected those demands.

She had been seized along with two other fallow-Americans and a Dutch girl on 21 May when 40 heavily-armed, uniformed men stormed into a research station on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

She was released with a ransom demand for the other three of half a million dollars (4200,000 Sterling), the release ammunition. tanzanian President Julius Nyerere, top government officials and American diplomatic representatives met and discussed the demands but rejected them. A Government spokesman admitted this jeopardised the lives of the three students still held.

The American Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Beverly Carter, addressed Monday's news conference first and said the U.S. Government would continue to seek alternative means of securing the release of those still held.

Miss Smuts then read a prepared statement. She said after being kidnapped they were taken across the lake into zeire. The guerrillas, she said, appeared well organised and had many guns in their camp. They told her they opposed the Government of Zaire, she said they were well treated but added that if no compromise could be reached within the 60-day deadline set by the kidnappers, she was convinced the others would be killed.
