    TANKS, ARMOURED CARS AND SOLDIERS PARADED THROUGH SUEZ ON THURSDAY (24 OCTOBER) TO MARK THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE THEE-MONTH ISRAELI SIEGE OF THE CITY.

    THOUSANDS OF SUEZ CITIZENS WHO HAVE RETURNED TO THE WAR-RAVAGED CITY WATCHED THE PROCESSION. IT INCLUDED UNITS OF THE ARMY, MILITIA ND POLICE WHO HELPED DEFEND SUEZ WHEN ISRAELI FORCES BEGAN TO SURROUND THE CITY A YEAR AGO.

    THEY WERE FOLLOWED BY A MARCH OF CIVILIANS WHO HELPED THE MILITARY FORCES DURING THE SIEGE. NURSES AND HOSPITAL WORKERS ALSO TOOK TO THE STREETS.

    THE PARADE BEGAN AT MIDDAY -- THE HOUR WHEN AN ISRAELI ARMOURED FORCE TRIED TO ENTER THE TOWN ON THAT DAY A YEAR BEFORE.

    THE WIFE OF THE EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT, MRS. JIHAN SADAT, AND THE DEPUTY PREMIER, GENERAL MAMDOUH SALEM ATTENDED THE CELEBRATIONS IN THE CITY WHICH STILL BEARS THE SCARS OF THE FEROCIOUS FIGHTING WHICH TOOK PLACE AROUND IT LAST YEAR.

    SYNOPSIS: MRS. SADAT TOURED HOSPITALS IN THE TOWN BEFORE THE PARADE WHICH BEGAN AT MIDDDAY.

    THAT HOUR HAS PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE RESIDENTS OF SUEZ ... FOR IT WAS THEN -- A YEAR AGO -- THAT THIRTY ISRAELI TANKS MADE A DETERMINED PUSH TOWARDS THE TOWN CENTRE ONLY TO BE REPULSED BY THE DEFENDERS.

    EGYPTIAN TROOPS WERE THE MAIN DEFENDERS BUT OTHERS HELPED AND ALL WEE HONOURED AS THIS "SUEZ DAY" PARADE WOUND ITS WAY THROUGH THE STREETS WHICH STILL SHOW SIGNS OF THE SAVAGE FIGHTING WHICH OCCURRED IN AND NEAR THE TOWN LAST YEAR. AMONG THEM WERE SUEZ CANAL WORKERS, HOSPITAL WORKERS AND NURSES.
