  • Description

The Deputy leader of South Africa's extreme right-wing Herstigte Nasionale Party, Mr. Jaap Marais, went on trial in Cape Town's Supreme Court today (May 11) facing three charges under the Officials Secrets Act. Mr. Marais was filmed during last month's General Election campaign.

Today's trial opened in secret session. The charges are in connection with a statement alleged to have been issued by Mr. Marais to a number of Sunday newspapers in February. It was not published because the newspapers were warned about possible consequences by the police.

Counsel appearing for the state said that the evidence on the first two charges was of a "a highly secret nature" concerning the safety of the Republic and containing secret instructions from the Prime Minister to the country's security services. The third charge concerned the possible publication of those instructions.

Forty-eight-year-old Mr. Marais, who lost his seat in last month's elections, arrived at the court looking relaxed.
