  • Description

About 200 wives and children of United Nations officers and personnel serving in the Lebanon crossed into Israel on Thursday (30 October) as fighting in Beirut escalated.

They arrived at the Rosh Hanikra border post on the Mediterranean in a convoy of cars escorted by U.N. vehicles flying large U.N. flags. Many were accompanied to the border by their husbands who remained in Lebanon. The families brought with them clothing but were not allowed furniture.

U.N. Officers said household effects would be brought to Israel in a special convoy if the situation warranted. But they added the situation in Beirut appeared to be deteriorating rapidly.

The women rushed to buy milk and bread for their children, saying they had not been able to obtain such supplies in the Lebanese capital for many days.

Street fighting in Beirut has entered its seventh week and the struggle is becoming fiercer than ever. An increasing number of the city's wealthier residents have left the city and sought refuge in the summer resort towns in the mountains overlooking the capital.

Meanwhile, an estimated 250,000 refugees have crossed the Lebanese border into Syria. Most of them are poverty stricken. It is estimated half are Syrian residents of lebanon and the rest Lebanese nationals.

Israel has made a plea to several international organisations to intercede on behalf of the Jewish community in embattled Beirut. A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Jerusalem has claimed that a number of shots had been fired into the city's Jewish quarter during the factional fighting. Some 2,500 Jews live in Beirut.
