  • Description

Tokyo, July 2: demonstrators estimated to number 200,000 and including many students and trade unionists parade through the main streets after a big protest meeting outside the Diet and Prime Minister's Residence.

Along the route, which led past one of the capital's main police stations, there were scuffles with police as the protesters performed their now-traditional snake dance.

The Tokyo protest together with others held simultaneously throughout Japan are claimed as the biggest demonstration since ratification last month of the new US Security Treaty.

Aim of the angry Japanese: dissolution of the Diet and invalidation of the new Treaty.

Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party announces it will meet July 13 to elect a new party President, and Prime Minister to replace Nobusuke Kishi, who said recently he intended to resign.
