  • Description

In Cyprus on Monday (27 February) the first stages of the trial of two Arabs accused of killing an Egyptian newspaper editor got under way amid heavy security. The murder of the newspaper editor, Mr. Youssef Sibai, a close friend of President Anwar Sadat, led to the hostage drama at Larnaca airport just over a week ago. Then, after a gun battle at the airport involving Egyptian commandos and Cypriot troops both countries broke off diplomatic relations with each other. Their ambassadors have recently returned home. Now, from Nicosia, the British Broadcasting Corporation's Chris Drake sends this report on the start of the trial.

SYNOPSIS: Before the trial started Egypt's ambassador in Cyprus, Mr. Hassan Shash, spoke to newsmen, about his recall to Cairo.

As the Egyptian ambassador was leaving, the Cypriot ambassador Mr. Antis Soteriades was arriving at Larnaca airport from Cairo. Reuters report that Greece will now look after Egypt's interest in Cyprus while Britain will take care of Cypriot interests in Egypt.
