Background: EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY, USA

The national teams of Italy and the United States played a no-score draw in an exhibition game at East Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A. on May 30. Four days earlier (May 26), the World Cup holders beat the Canadian national team in Toronto, 2-0. The Italians controlled much of the game, but their efforts were repeatedly frustrated by the poor condition of the Giants' Stadium made very slippery for days of rain. Led by left-winger Alessandro Altobelli and striker Bruno Giordano, the Italians attacked relentlessly in continuous steady rain, but missed several opportunities to score. After just two minutes, Pietro Fanna hit the crossbar. The Italians kept up the pressure with short passes and superb ball control, Fanna, once again, headed a cross from Alessandro Altobelli, but Jeff Durgan, headed clear off the line. Twelve minutes later Pietro Vierchowod missed from just three metres (yards). Team America counter-attacked well and Hugo Perez hit the crossbar twice, in the 18th and 25th minutes. The rain, heavier in the second half, made it increasingly difficult for both teams to control the ball. In the 70th minute, Italy's Altobelli missed what to be an easy chance missing from only four metres (yards). The U.S. team almost stole victory 16 minutes from the end, when they hit the post with a header.
