Background: In Italy, more than 100,000 pensioners and members of their families held a march and rally on Tuesday (16 March). They were protesting against what they called the "waste, evasion and privilege of the social pension plan". The pensioners are members of the CGIL/CISL and UIL United Union. They gathered at four separate points to march to the Piazza San Giovanni, where they were addressed by CGIL General Secretary Luciano Lama. The pensioners have a seven-point plan to present to the government. Among benefits they are seeking are a union -- government agreement for a better pension system; guarantees for a more efficient health service, fairer taxes and anti-inflation measures for pensioners; special rates for electricity, gas and telephone services.
