    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE, OF TANZANIA, REFERRED TO WARM AND STRONG RELATIONS WITH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA WHEN HE OPENED A GBP350,000 STERLING "PEACE STADIUM" AT SEBULENI, IN ZANZIBAR. YESTERDAY (MONDAY). THE STADIUM, ON A SITE THREE MILES (5 KMS) FROM ZANZIBAR TOWN, WAS BUILT WITH THE HELP OF CHINESE AID AND TECHNICIANS.

    THE OPENING OF THE STADIUM COINCIDED WITH THE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REVOLUTION WITH OVERTHREW THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FORMER SULTAN OF ZANZIBAR.

    IN HIS OPENING SPEECH, PRESIDENT NYERERE SAID THE INDIAN OCEAN ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR HAD UNDERGONE MANY CHANGES IN THE PAST SIX YEARS, AND HE WAS SURE THERE WOULD BE MANY MORE CHANGES IN THE NEXT SIX YEARS.

    HE URGED SPORTSMEN WHO USED THE STADIUM TO PLAY IN THE SPIRIT OF PEACE.

    WITH VICE-PRESIDENT SHEIKH ABEID KARUME, PRESIDENT NYERERE WATCHED A MASS PROCESSION OF YOUNG PEOPLE, SCHOOLCHILDREN, SOLDIERS AND POLICE IN THE STADIUM.

    THE PRESIDENT, UNVEILING A PLAQUE COMMEMORATING THE OPENING CEREMONY, PRAISED THE WORK OF THE CHINESE IN BRINGING AID TO ZANZIBAR.

    THE PRESIDENT WAS LATER ENTERTAINED AT A STATE DINNER.
