U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance laid a wreath on the grave of Queen Alia -- the late wife of Jordan's King Hussein -- in Amman on Friday (18 February). Mr Vance interrupted talks with Jordanian government ministers to pay his tribute to Queen Alia.
SYNOPSIS: The Queen was killed in a helicopter crash on 9 February. The accident also killed Jordan's Health Minister Mohammed al-Bashire, and two senior army officers.
Queen Alia -- King Hussein's third wife -- was returning from inspecting a hospital 80 miles (125 kilometres) from Amman. She had two children during her marriage to King Hussein, one of them, Prince Ali, is an heir to the Jordanian throne.
Mr Vance arrived in Jordan on Friday after visits to Israel, Egypt and the Lebanon as part of his six nation Middle-East tour. He's seeking ways of achieving a permanent peace in the Middle-East, including the re-convening of the Geneva conference.
