    THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE PAN-AFRICAN WOMEN'S UNION OPENED IN BRAZZAVILLE ON FRIDAY (AUGUST 25) TO CONSIDER THE ROLE OF THE AFRICAN WOMAN IN SOCIETY. DELEGATES FROM 16 AFRICAN COUNTRIES WERE PRESENT AT THE CONFERENCE, WHICH CONTINUES UNTIL AUGUST 31.

    IN HER OPENING SPEECH, MME JEANNE CISSE, SECRETARY - GENERAL OF THE UNION, PAID TRIBUTE TO THE "FIGHTING WOMEN" OF ANGOLA, SOUTH AFRICA, MOZAMBIQUE, PORTUGUESE GUINEA AND THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. SHE SAID THESE WOMEN WERE - "SO DEAR TO AFRICA BECAUSE OF THE TRIALS THEY ARE UNDERGOING AND THE COURAGE THEY SHOW IN DEFENDING, WITH THEIR OWN FREEDOM, THE FREEDOM OF ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD."
    MME CISSE CALLED ON AFRICAN HEADS OF STATE TO FORGET WHAT DIVIDED THEM AND TO THINK MORE OF WHAT MIGHT UNITE THEM.

    ON THE AGENDA FOR THE DELEGATES WERE CONSIDERATION OF VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE LIKE OF THE AFRICAN WOMAN -- IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, IN THE FIELD OF AFRICAN UNITY, IN THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE AND IN THE MAINTENANCE OF PEACE.

    COUNTRIES REPRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE INCLUDE - ALGERIA, ANGOLA, SOUTH AFRICA, BURUNDI, RWANDA, TANZANIA, CONGO-KINSHASA, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, GUINEA, MALI, SENEGAL, DAHOMEY, IVORY COAST, CHAD, MALAWI AND CAMROUN.
