Background: KRALAR CHAS & KRALAR THMEI, KAMPUCHEA.

INTRODUCTION: The leaders of the three main factions in Kampuchea which oppose the Vietnamese-backed government, have arrived in Singapore for a crucial meeting. They will discuss the possibility of merging their forces inside the country into a single fighting front. The leaders are Prince Norodom Sihanouk, the former Head of State, Khieu Samphan, head of the ousted Khmer Rouge, and Sone Sann of the Khmer Peoples National Liberation Front (KPNLF).Meanwhile the KPNLF have been pursuing their guerrilla warfare strategy against the Vietnamese troops still in Kampuchea.

SYNOPSIS: The KPNLF have eight training camps in western Kampuchea, where they teach their troops how to use heavy weapons.Formed when Son Sann was in exile in France in 1979, the force now has ten thousand soldiers at its command.Apart from the fighting forces, the faction has control of 100,000 people living within their area. The KPNLF say they are fighting for a non-communist and neutral Kampuchea and their first priority is the removal of the estimated 200,000 Vietnamese troops currently in the country to support the Heng Samrin government.

The KPNLF shot this film which purports to show a clash with Vietnamese troops at Kralar Chas. The KPNLF guerrillas have been involved in regular clashes with the Vietnamese and forces of the Kampuchean government.

The commander of the KPNLF is General Dien Del.He is under no illusions about the military capability of his unit.He has said they cannot attack Vietnamese positions but can harass the enemy and carry out sabotage acts.Dien Del also knows that the rival Khmer Rouge faction is much stronger than the KPNLF.It has more men in arms, and powerful backing from China and other South East Asian nations.

The KPNLF film shows casualties from the reported sortie.Such losses are one reason why the efforts to form a united front are considered so important. In the past the KPNLF have failed to reach agreement with their rival forces.

The KPNLF film purports a captured enemy being interrogated. The Kampuchean government has said it would allow the gradual withdrawal of Vietnamese troops. But first it demands an end to what it calls foreign aid to the guerrilla forces.
