    PREPARATIONS AT NARRABEEN LAKES NEAR SYDNEY FOR THE NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SAILFISH CLASS. THE SAILFISH MADE ITS FIRST APPEARANCE IN AUSTRALIAN WATERS IN THE LATE FIFTIES. SINCE THEN IT'S BECOME VERY POPULAR, ESPECIALLY WITH YOUNG SAILORS. THE SAILFISH DOESN'T COST MUCH TO BUILD AND IT'S LIGHTWEIGHT AND EASY TO TRANSPORT AND TO MAINTAIN.

    THE CHAMPIONSHIPS ATTRACTED 18 BOATS AND COMPETITION HAS FIERCE. AT THE START THEY WERE CLOSELY PUNCHED.

    ALL THE COMPETITORS HAD TO WEAR AN AID TO BUOYANCY.

    THE FINAL MARGIN IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WAS LESS THAN A MINUTE AND A SAILOFF WAS NECESSARY TO DECIDE FIRST AND SECOND PLACES. THE EVENTUAL WINNER WAS ARGON. ONE OF HER CLOSE RIVALS HAD SOME BAD LUCK ROUNDING AND BOUY, BUT NO HARM WAS DONE.
