  • Description

Christmas shopping the world over has reflected the mood of the countries victims of growing recession.

Be it in the West German city, Frankfurt, or in the capital of Argentina Buenos Aires, shoppers have cut their spending this year.

Shop-owners in Frankfurt have reported a drop in sales. This is partly because the economic situation has brought about a sharp change in the Germans' spending habits. They are said to be no longer "consumption crazy"
In the last year the sale of cars has slumped 30 per cent and the turnover of clothes, shoes, furniture, food and household goods has also fallen.

West Germany faces growing unemployment which is expected to reach the one million mark this winter. In addition about half a million are now working on short time.

In Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina, the situation is very much the sea Argentines have also suffered a staggering series of price increases in the past year.

The severity of the situation prompted President Maria Estela Peron to launch a campaign designed to beat rising prices.

The Economy Minister, Alfredo Gomez Morales, recently told visiting journalists that inflation in his country was running at 25 to 27 per cent.
