  • Description

THE AMERICAN DEFENCE DEPARTMENT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) SHOWED ITS VERSATILE F.III SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THE NEW PLANE'S OUTSTANDING FEATURE IS ITS VARIABLE SWEEP WING. WHEN EXTENDED IT IS CAPABLE OF LOW RECONNAISSANCE SPEEDS OF 100 MPH (ABOUT 160 KPH). WHEN THE WINGS ARE SWEPT BACK HOWEVER THE F.III BECOMES A SUPERSONIC FIGHTER-BOMBER CAPABLE OF SPEEDS UP TO 1850 MPH (ABOUT 2977 KPH).

LIKE BRITAIN'S TSR 2, THE F.III IS EQUIPPED WITH AN INERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM, EXTENSIVE RADAR FOR USE IN MAPPING/TERRAIN CLEARANCE AND BOMBING, AND PROPULSION AND FLIGHT-CONTROL SYSTEMS SUITABLE FOR SUSTAINED SUPERSONIC FLIGHT AT VERY LOW ALTITUDES.

THERE ARE TWO VERSIONS OF THIS NEW PLANE. THE ONE DESIGNED FOR THE U.S. NAVY WILL BE SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THE AIR FORCE MODEL.

F.III WILL CARRY ANY OF THE CURRENT AIR FORCE WEAPONS, CONVENTIONAL AND NUCLEAR, AND IS EXPECTED TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGHTER PLANE OF THE FUTURE.
