Background: SOME 30,000 CYCLING ENTHUSIASTS GATHERED AT ESCH-SUR-ALZETTE IN LUXEMBOURG, FEB 18, TO WATCH A HARD-FOUGHT 13TH WORLD CROSS-COUNTRY CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP, WHICH SAW ITALY'S RENATO LONGO VICTORIOUS AND GERMAN TITLE HOLDER ROLF WOLFSHOHL DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED AT HAVING TO PART WITH THE RAINBOW JERSEY HE HAD KEPT FOR TWO SUCCESSIVE YEARS.

GRAND DUKE JEAN OF LUXEMBOURG WAS ON THE GRANDSTAND AT THE MUNICIPAL STADIUM, WHERE COMPETITORS FROM NINE COUNTRIES SET OUT IN MERCIFULLY DRY WEATHER ON THE SIX LAPS OF THE 3.4-KILOMETRE CIRCUIT, A TOTAL DISTANCE OF JUST UNDER 13 MILES.

HAMPERED BY THE EFFECTS OF A BAD COLD, WOLFSHOHL STRUGGLED TO KEEP UP WITH THE LEADING GROUP WHO SOON TURNED INTO A SMALL PACK OF FOLLOWERS AS LONGO PULLED AWAY. AT THE END OF THE FIRST LAP, LONGO HAD 30 SECONDS IN HAND. SPURRED ON BY THE ROARING CHEERS OF ITALIANS WORKING IN LUXEMBOURG, HE BUILT UP HIS LEAD UNTIL IT COULD NO LONGER BE CONTESTED.

WHEN WOLFSHOHL DROPPED OUT AT THE HALF-WAY MARK, THE FIGHT FOR SECOND PLACE WAS ON AMONG GANDOLFO AND DUFRAISSE OF FRANCE, DECLERCQ OF BELGIUM, AND LUXEMBOURG'S FAVOURITE CHARLY GAUL.

AT THE FINISH, BACK IN THE STADIUM, RENATO LONGO - WORLD CHAMPION OF 1959 - CAME FIRST IN 54MIN 14SECS. TWO MINUTES AND 39 SECONDS BEHIND WAS GANDOLFO, FOLLOWED BY DUFRAISSE, DECLERQ AND GAUL. A BELGIAN TOOK SIXTH PLACE, AND SEVENTH AND EIGHT FELL TO FRENCH COMPETITORS. IN THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION, FRANCE WAS FIRST BEFORE BELGIUM AND ITALY.
