    The lap record went on Wednesday to Britain's Jackie Stewart, who was 2.5 secs. inside the official time, making an average speed of 117.9 miles per hour. He took the pole position with Chris Amon of New Zealand in a Matra-Simca, and Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland in a Ferrari.
