  • Description

American Secretary of State William Rogers expressed hope in Washington on Tuesday (June 15) that an interim settlement could be reached, this year, to allow the opening of the Suez Canal.

Speaking at a press conference on Capitol Hill, Mr. Rogers listed five major points of agreement by the Big Four powers (France, United Kingdom, United States and the USSR) and Egypt and Israel regarding Middle East objectives.

All sides agree that the Suez canal should be opened under Egyptian auspices. The disagreements ,however, concern principles governing an Israeli withdrawal from the banks of the Canal. Later, a State Department spokesman said the United States intended to do everything possible to achieve agreement in the next round of Big Four talks in Berlin in June 25.
