  • Description

On the 15th anniversary of the surrender of the German Army, May 8, French President de Gaulle took the salute of French troops at the Arc de Triomphe, Paris, France.

Accompanied by Minister of Armed Forces Messmer he was greeted at the Place d'Etoile - where stands the monument to Napoleon's victories - by General Sala, Military Governor of Paris.

After laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, President de Gaulle reviewed soldiers of the Paris garrison and ex-servicemen. The he returned to the Elysee Palace for talks with Indian Premier Nehru, on a one-day visit to Paris. But the military ceremony continued, as troops with banners flying and bands playing marched from the Place d'Etoile to Les Invalides, another shrine to French military glory, where Napoleon is buried.
