DR HASSAN SABRY AL-KHOLY, U.A.R. PRESIDENT NASSER'S SPECIAL ENVOY, ARRIVED IN AMMAN FROM CAIRO YESTERDAY?

  • Description

DR HASSAN SABRY AL-KHOLY, U.A.R. PRESIDENT NASSER'S SPECIAL ENVOY, ARRIVED IN AMMAN FROM CAIRO YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO ARRANGE TALKS WITH JORDANIAN KING HUSSEIN IN THE WAKE OF LAST THURSDAY'S (21 AUGUST) FIRE IN JERUSALEM'S AL-AQSA MOSQUE, ONE OF THE HOLIEST OF MOSLEM SHRINES. IN BEIRUT, YESTERDAY, BANKS AND MANY BUSINESS FIRMS AND SHOPS WERE CLOSED AS A SIGN OF PROTEST AGAINST THE FIRE.

THE LEBANESE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR YOUSEF SALEM, ALSO ARRIVED IN AMMAN ON FRIDAY AND WAS GREETED AT AMMAN AIRPORT BY THE JORDANIAN DEPUTY PREMIER AND FOREIGN MINISTER, MR ABDEL-MONEIM AL-RIFAI. ALTHOUGH THE VISIT HAD BEEN PLANNED FOR SOME TIME, IT WAS EXPECTED THAT THE PRESENT SITUATION WOULD BE HIGH ON THE LIST OF TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST HAS HEIGHTENED GENERALLY OVER THE WEEKEND AS PRESIDENT NASSER DECLARED THAT FORCE MUST BE USED AGAINST ISRAEL AND KING FAISAL OF SAUDI ARABIA CALLED FOR A HOLY WAR TO LIBERATE THE HOLY PLACES IN JERUSALEM. THE JORDANIAN MONARCH RENEWED HIS CALL FOR AN ARAB SUMMIT AFTER THE FIRE.

DR. KHOLY WAS GREETED UPON HIS ARRIVAL BY MR RIFIA AND JORDANIAN DEPUTY PREMIER MR AHMED TOUKAN. DR KHOLY DELIVERED A WRITTEN MESSAGE TO KING HUSSEIN WHICH WAS OFFICIALLY DESCRIBED IN AMMAN AS IMPORTANT. DR KHOLY, WHO LEFT TODAY (SUNDAY) FOR DAMASCUS AND BAGHDAD, SAID HE WAS CARRYING WRITTEN MESSAGES FROM PRESIDENT NASSER TO SYRIAN PRESIDENT NUREDDIN AL-ATASSI AND IRAQI PRESIDENT AHMED HASSAN AL-BAKR. HE DECLINED, HOWEVER, TO DISCLOSE THE CONTENTS OF THE MESSAGES.

THE GENERAL STRIKE -- OBSERVED NOT ONLY IN BEIRUT, BUT OTHER MAIN LEBANESE CITIES -- WAS CALLED BY THE COUNTRY'S MUFTI, THE HIGHEST RELIGIOUS LEADER. DURING THE STRIKE, AN ESTIMATED 700 LEBANESE AND PALESTINIANS STAGED A QUIET PROCESSION THROUGH BEIRUT.

ISRAEL'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ARREST OF AUSTRALIAN MICHAEL ROMAN, A 28-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN, ON SUSPICION OF STARTING THE MOSQUE FIRE, APPEARS TO HAVE DONE LITTLE TO CALM TEMPERS IN THE ARAB WORLD. MANY ARAB LEADERS ARE STILL SAID TO BLAME ISRAEL FOR THE ACT.
