    TIMO MAEKINEN OF FINLAND TONIGHT (MONDAY) STILL LEADS THE FIELD IN THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB'S INTERNATIONAL MOTOR RALLY WHICH BEGAN ON SATURDAY. THE 93 SURVIVORS OF THE 144 STARTERS ARE TONIGHT STOPPING IN AVIEMORE, SCOTLAND, AFTER CROSSING THE BORDER FROM ENGLAND.

    EARLIER IT WAS REPORTED THAT MAEKINEN'S MINE-COOPER HAD GEAR-BOX TROUBLE, BUT THE 28 YEAR OLD FINN INCREASED HIS LEAD OVER HIS NEAREST RIVAL, BENGT SODERSTROM (FORD LOTUS CORTINA), TO SIX MINUTES, FOUR SECONDS.

    JIM CLARK, SCOTLAND'S FORMER WORLD GRAND PRIX CHAMPION, WAS DRIVING A FORD LOTUS CORTINA CONSISTENTLY FASTEST OR SECOND FASTEST ON TODAY'S SPECIAL STAGES, SOME OF THEM THROUGH DIFFICULT FOREST TRACKS. CLARK STARTED TODAY IN 14TH PLACE BUT IS NOW LYING SIXTH. ANOTHER OF BRITAIN'S FORMER CHAMPIONS, GRAHAM HILL, IN A BMC COOPER, RETIRED FROM THE RALLY NEAR CARLISLE WITH GEAR-BOX TROUBLE.
