    Egypt's official celebration of the first anniversary of the October Middle East War began yesterday (5 October) on a sombre note as leaders honoured the thousands of war dead.

    At a Cairo military cemetery in the famous City of the Dead, with the tombs of the Mameluke warrior-sultans in the background. Egyptian War Minister Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail led the tribute to the war dead.

    Throughout the week of official celebrations, the War Minister will play a leading role visiting graves, military centres and rehabilitation centres for the war wounded.

    His message on the anniversary was that Egyptian troops had emerged from the war with higher morale and more experience. And during a television interview he declared that since the ceasefire, Egypt had been working towards the total liberation of occupied Arab territories. Egyptian forces were planning and preparing for any possible resumption of fighting, he added.

    SYNOPSIS: Egypt's War Minister Ahmed Ismail led the government presence. Other leaders there included Prime Minister Hegazy.

    Field Marshal Ismail laid a wreath in honour of the thousands of war dead. He'll be a central figure throughout the week-long commemoration of the war. His anniversary message, during a television interview, spoke of Egypt continuing to work for the liberation of all Arab territory since the ceasefire. And he said that Egyptian forces are planning and preparing for any resumption of the fighting in the future. He added his belief that Egypt had emerged from last year's war with nigher morale and greatly increased experience.
