  • Description

AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY ENGINEERS ARE WORKING TO REBUILD THE FLOATING BEN LUC BRIDGE, NEAR SAIGON, BLOWN UP YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BY VIET CONG SABOTEURS. THE VIET CONG KNOCKED OUT THE BRIDGE WITH TWO FLOATING MINES, ONLY FIVE WEEKS AFTER THEY HAD DESTROYED THE MAIN BEN LUC ROAD BRIDGE.

THE VIET CONG RAIDERS MADE THEIR ATTACK BEFORE DAWN. AT THE SAME TIME AS THEY WERE MINING THE BRIDGE THEY ATTACKED A NEARBY MILITARY POST WITH MORTAR FIRE.

BEN LUC BRIDGE IS 15 MILES (25 KMS) SOUTHWEST OF SAIGON AND IS VITAL FOR THE FLOW OF FOOD SUPPLIES TO THE CAPITAL. IT HAS BECOME A FAVOURITE TARGET OF VIET CONG SABOTEURS.

TRAFFIC STARTED BANKING UP AT BOTH APPROACHES TO THE BRIDGE IN THE EARLY PART OF YESTERDAY. ENGINEERS WILL BE WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK UNTIL THE BRIDGE BECOMES OPERATIONAL ONCE AGAIN.
