THE PAPAL LEGATE TO SOUTH VIETNAM, ARCHBISHOP ANGELO PALMAS, TOURED THE CAMP AND PRESENTED THE GIFTS ON BEHALF OF THE CHURCH.

ACCORDING TO AMERICAN OFFICIALS, MANY OF THEM WERE CAPTURED CARRYING VIET CONG ARMS AND MESSAGES OR TOSSING GRENADES IN STREETS. ABOUT 60 PER CENT OF THE PRISONERS ARE ILLITERATE. THE ARCHBISHOP VISITED THE SCHOOL WHERE PRISONERS SAT AT ROUGH-HEWN DESKS LITTERED WITH EXERCISE BOOKS.

GAILY COLOURED DECORATIONS AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FLAGS WERE TIED TO THE FENCES AS THE ARCHBISHOP'S CAR ARRIVED. ARCHBISHOP PALMAS SPOKE TO SOME OF THE INMATES LINED UP IN THE CAMP'S HOSPITAL AND SPENT SEVERAL MINUTES WITH AN 11-YEAR-OLD BOY. HE THEN VISITED THE KITCHENS AND THE DORMITORIES.
