  • Description

Two goals in 22 minutes enabled Bayern Munich of West Germany to retain the European Soccer Cup from England's Leeds United in Paris on Wednesday (28 May).

Leeds kept pressure on the Bayern goal during the first half but were unable to follow through their movements to score.

Bayern lost two valuable players through injury. Bjorn Andersson with torn knee ligaments after only four minutes and Uli Hoeness with a bad knee injury just before half-time.

The handicap looked too great as Leeds pressed forward, but were unable to score.

After the break Bayern began to press forward themselves and with 19 minutes left Franz Roth scored the opening goal.

Then in the 82nd minute Gerd Muller tapped home the clincher to secure the cup for the West German side.

During the match several Leeds fans and a number of French riot police were injured when groups of Leeds supporters started throwing objects -- including plastic and steel seats -- onto the pitch.

They were incensed at the referee's decision to disallow a Leeds goal by Peter Lorimer by ruling Billy Bremner off-side.
