Forty nine out of 65 starters were still in the Moroccan Aautomobile Rally at the start of the second stage from Fez to Marrakesh. The rally started from Rabat on Wednesday (15 May) with competitors from eight nations taking part.
Of the African nations competing, Morocco has 13 entries, the Ivory Coast nine, and Algeria three.
Fourteen different makes of car are entered but the French firm of Renault is the only one giving officials sponsorship. At the end of the first stage, Renaults filled the first seven places. Frenchman Bernard Darniche, who started favourite in the event, abandoned his attempt during the first stage with a broken gear box in his Renault Alpine.
The 14th Moroccan rally is being held over four stages, totalling 2,425 miles (3,879 kms). The first stage is from Rabat to Fez through the Rif Mountains. The second from Fex to marrakesh through the Great Atlas. The third down into the Sahara cases from Marrakesh nd the fourth and longest through parts of the desert to Casablanca.
