  • Description

Anti-nuclear demonstrators were out in the streets of Paris yesterday (26 April) -- but on this occasion they were not protesting against the Bomb, but against French government plans to build a chain of new nuclear power stations.

Five-thousand people marched through the French capital opposing the scheme to build 50 nuclear power stations by 1985, intended to diversify the country's sources of energy. The plan has provoked outcry from environmentalists.

Later, the protest produced a clash when police fired teargas to disperse a group of rowdy youths, who set fire to two cars and stoned the windows of several banks. A number of protesters and policemen were injured.

Under the plan announced last year, work on 13 of the nuclear power stations will have started before the end of this year. During each subsequent year, construction is due to begin on at least six more stations.
