Background: President Zia Ul Haq of Pakistan has introduced new Islamic taxes which will be charged on the monetary assets and agricultural produce of the country's Moslem citizens.

SYNOPSIS: President Zia, attended the Mosque in Islamabad, to listen to details of the new taxes from the Imam. Known as the "Sakat" tax, the Imam told the Congregation that it will be charged at the annual rate of two point five per cent.

For the special service, President Zia and other government officials wore white achkans. It was the first time in Pakistan's history that a financial measure had been announced in a Mosque.

President Zia said that the Sakat tax would be charged on financial assets, except on current bank accounts, while an "Ushr" tax will be levied at five per cent on agricultural produce from irrigated land, and ten per cent on non-irrigated.

However, the Presidential decree announcing the new taxes didn't give any date for the introduction of the scheme.
