  • Description

TWELVE ISRAELIS, HELD IN ALGERIA SINCE THEIR AIRLINER WAS HIJACKED 39 DAYS AGO, FLEW INTO ROME TODAY (SATURDAY). THE SEVEN CREW MEMBERS AND FIVE PASSENGERS FROM THE BOEING 707 SAID THEY HAD ONLY LEARNED OF THEIR RELEASE THIS MORNING.

THE EL AL AIRLINER STAYED BEHIND IN ALGIERS THOUGH MR. NISSIM JOSHA, CHARGE D'AFFAIRES AT THE ISRAELI EMBASSY IN ROME, SAID HE WAS OPTIMISTIC THAT IT WOULD ALSO BE RELEASED.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON ITS WAY FROM ROME TO ISRAEL WITH 38 PASSENGERS AND 10 CREW ON JULY 23 WHEN IT WAS FORCED TO FLY TO ALGIERS BY THREE MEN.

THE RELEASE OF THE LAST 12 PASSENGERS AND CREW FOLLOWED A MONTH OF MEDIATION BETWEEN ISRAEL AND ALGERIA, CARRIED ON THROUGH THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT.

THE HIJACKING HAD INTERNATIONAL REPERCUSSIONS AMONG WORLD AIRLINES AND, AT ONE POINT, THE FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE PILOTS' ASSOCIATION THREATENED TO BOYCOTT ALGIERS AIRPORT.
