  • Description

An observatory high on the slopes of Mount Etna was badly damaged by red hot molten lava this week as the volcano continued its worst eruptions for 10 years. In the past few days hundreds f new craters and fissures have opened up pouring out lava and hurling molten rock and slowing ashes hundreds of yards (metres) into the air. One river of lava has crept 2,000 yards (metres) down the mountain, but so far no danger to life or property has been reported.

SYNOPSIS: Volcanologists are taking a long hard look at Mount Etna in Sicily. The volcano is undergoing its worst eruptions in ten years. So far there's no danger to property or livestock in villages lying in the shadow of the huge mountain, but at the first sign of danger the local inhabitants will be evacuated.

In the last week hundreds of new craters and fissures have opened up, pouring out lava and hurling molten rock and glowing ashes hundreds of yards (metres) into the air. An observatory high on the slopes of Mount Etna has been badly damaged and abandoned. One river of lava has crept more than 2,000 yards (metres) down the mountain, but so far no danger to life or property has been reported.

Police have warned hundreds of tourists to stay away. The rivers spewing from the craters are more then 1,000 degrees centigrade and are moving at about one mile (1.5 kms) per hour. Many tourists fail to realise the extreme danger posed by the constantly shifting mountain side. Strangely enough--amid all the beat, Mount Etna has received several inches of snow in the past few days.
