  • Description

Visnews filmed British troops strolling unarmed for the first time in off duty hours Jan 17 in the once forbidden Murder Mile.

That is the name given to Ledra Street, Nicosia's main shopping street, where EOKA terrorists shot down servicemen and civilians in their campaign to free Cyprus.

Now that some calm has come to the island as negotiations proceed between Britain, Greece and Turkey, troops not on duty can spend their leisure again in the capital they have patrolled for more than three bitter years.

Governor Sir Hugh Foot has said more restrictions will be eased and the release of detainee will continue despite two recent EOKA leaflets threatening further terrorist activities.

The leaflets came after the announcement that troops would continue the search of villages in North West Cyprus - a stronghold of underground activities.

Foot however took the initiative to ease restrictions last week after continued calm in the EOKA truce. If the truce became permanent, Foot said the emergency would end leaving the way open to the return of Makarios to the island.
